The song was written and composed by Hank Williams in 1952 and is considered one of the country's most important standards. Williams was inspired to write the song while driving from Nashville, Tennessee, to Shreveport, Louisiana with her fiancé. Produced by Fred Rose, the song was recorded during its final session at Castle Studio in Nashville on Sept. 23, 1953, and was released in January 1953.

Williams died of heart problems (or suspicious circumstances) on his way to a new year's concert in Canton, Ohio, just a few months after recording the song. The song was released in January 1953 after his death and spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Country & Western charts.
