독도 편과 백두산 편에서 배경음악으로 사용되어 상당한 인지도를 얻었다.

방송의 내용과 노래의 분위기, 가사가 잘 어우어러져 좋은 음악 선정이었다는 평을 받았다.

이후 조금씩 유명세를 타기 시작했고, 불후의 명곡 전설을 노래하다에서 홍경민, 부활, 소향등이

리메이크하여 부르기도 했다. 부활은 서유석 편에서 이 노래로 428표를 얻어 우승했다.

상술한 바와 같이 조용필의 2005년 평양 단독 콘서트 “Pil & Peace”에서 앙코르 곡으로 불렸다.

조용필이 공연 뒤 나중에 밝힌 바에 따르면 특이한 점은, 애초에 공연이 기획될 당시에는

전혀 예정에 없던 곡이라는 점이고, 그것도 북한 측의 요청으로 불렀다는 것이다.

홀로 아리랑이 남한 노래임에도 불구하고 아리랑 선율에 터 잡아 독도와 통일 등

남북한 모두가 공감할 수 있는 주제의 가사를 가진 점 때문인지 이미 북한에도 널리 알려져

있었던 듯 하고, 북한 측에서는 이미 조용필을 비롯한 콘서트 팀이 평양에 들어와서

본공연을 얼마 앞두지 않은 때에 급하게 이 노래를 콕 집어

“정말 좋은 남한 노래 하나를 알고 있는데 무대에서 불러줄 수 없겠느냐”고 부탁을 하였다.

조용필의 술회에 따르면 정작 조용필은 이 노래에 대해서 잘 모르고 있었는데,

서둘러 곡을 파악한 뒤 앙코르로 적합하다고 생각해 흔쾌히 수락하고 얼마 남지 않은 시간 동안

준비를 마쳤다고 한다.
