“Crash on the Levee” is a lo-fi, demo track recorded in 1967 while Dylan was recovering from a motorcycle accident in July, 1966 in Woodstock, NY. He was working with the former Hawks, the band behind Canadian-based singer/songwriter, Ronnie Hawkins.
An improvised studio was set up in the basement of a house called Big Pink, at that time the home of Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson, all future members of The Band.
“Crash on the Levee” is part of the famous Basement Tapes that were sent to other artists to encourage them to record cover versions of Dylan’s songs. This practice was a very lucrative part of his early career.
Dylan had stopped touring and temporarily abandoned work an ABC-TV project he was working on called “Eat This Document,” about his 1966 European tour. His manager Albert Grossman ordered Dylan to increase his song catalog, the only way of making money for his client at that time.
In 1969 Dylan said: "They weren't demos for myself, they were demos of the songs. I was being PUSHED again into coming up with some songs. You know how those things go."
