????The sad story of Karen Carpenter: She had a beautiful voice and died young.

Karen Carpenter was ranked as one of the "100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll" by VH1 and earned a spot in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Singers of All Time". Her voice was praised as "one of the greatest voices of our lifetime" by Elton John. She inspired Madonna and Sheryl Crow.

Karen Carpenter was born on March 2, 1950, in New Haven, Connecticut. With her brother Richard, she formed the band The Carpenters and achieved great success.

The Carpenters signed with A&M Records in 1969 and found success in the 1970s. However, behind the scenes, Karen was struggling with anorexia nervosa.

She started dieting during her teenage years, first following the Stillman diet, which involved high protein and low carbs.

Karen's weight dropped to 120 pounds due to a diet, and she maintained this weight for the early years of the Carpenters. In 1973, she felt she looked heavy in a photo of herself performing on stage.

Karen’s response to this photo could be a sign of body dysmorphic disorder, a condition where individuals become obsessed with certain aspects of their appearance and perceive themselves differently than reality. At the time, little was known about mental conditions and eating disorders, so Karen had to struggle as best she could.

She hired a personal trainer but ended up looking heavier due to gaining muscle. Wanting to be thinner, she fired the trainer and started her weight loss program. Soon, Karen weighed just 91 pounds, looking visibly frail and gaunt, causing concern among fans.

Many people questioned if Karen might be ill, but the singer repeatedly denied any problems. Eventually, with the help of friends and family, Karen sought treatment from a New York City psychotherapist named Steven Levenkron.

In the early 1980s, Karen used thyroid medication and laxatives to lose weight, leading to serious health complications.

In 1982, Karen filed for divorce from her husband and began discussing plans for a new album with her brother as she was determined to get her life back on track. However, she tragically passed away before she could fulfill her dreams. Her last public appearance was on January 11, 1983, she saw her brother for the last time on February 1st and passed away on February 4th.

The autopsy of Karen Carpenter revealed that her death was caused by "emetine cardiotoxicity due to anorexia nervosa," with her use of ipecac syrup contributing to her demise.

After her passing, Karen Carpenter's struggle with anorexia helped shed light on eating disorders. Her family established the Karen A. Carpenter Memorial Foundation to raise awareness and support research on treatments.

Karen's eating disorder had a significant impact on her life, but she is best remembered as a highly talented young woman with one of the greatest voices in pop music. She brought a lot of joy to fans around the world.
