Claude Debussy:
Fantaisie pour piano et orchestre ∙

Hi Travis and Suzi! Welcome to part four of my second piano concerto series. While this work is entitled “Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra,“ it’s really a piano concerto. The only fantasy that’s happening here is the one that the three of us are having by listening to music together. Claude Debussy (deb-byoo-see, all three syllables get EXACTLY the same emphasis) was a French impressionist composer who wrote this work in 1889. It was supposed to be premiered in 1890, but the conductor, Vincent d’Indy (vawl-sawl-dawl-DEH), cancelled the concert due to insufficient rehearsal time. Debussy mistakenly took this as a criticism of his work and revised it several times before ultimately declaring that it should never be published or performed. It was finally premiered in 1919, a year after the composer’s death. It’s in three movements like a standard concerto with no break between the second movement and finale. It’s baffling to me that Debussy didn’t want the work to be published or performed as it is absolutely splendid. We start at the beginning of the second movement and go through to the end. By the way, the flute player with the gold flute somehow reminds me of the actor Gina Rodriguez (from “Not Dead Yet”). I hope you guys will enjoy this fantasy. Here is the haiku I penned to accompany the work: "Frère Jacques, hey! Your son’s new name is Tina?” What a wild day!” (Please start at 8:28 and end at 25:10.)
