JONAH SONG Monolised

A significant portion of church music in Zimbabwe is written in the Mbira/Mbakumba/Jiti/Katekwe 6/8 rhythms. This puts the music in the same category as songs by Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Four Brothers, Bhundu Boys, and other typical Zimbabwean artists. I categorise it as 'Mbira Based Music'.(In this case I'm using Mbira as a genre, not as an instrument) Churches that compose music in this kind of music include The Zimbabwe Roman Catholic church and their "Fata Murungu" rhythms and the mapostori sects.

This is not easily noticeable because of the way the music is performed. The Mapostori sects perform acapella without the use of instruments, whereas the Catholics only utilize the hosho and ngoma. However, the music returns to its original form as soon as electronic instruments are added,as in this Monolization case.

This proves that your musical performance will consistently include elements that are representative of your heritage and culture. Although there are common tonal and rhythmic principles in all music, different national styles are associated with specific rhythms and musical idioms.
