Old Friend is the story of an alcoholic who is giving up the booze and he is singing his story to his "Old Friend" the booze.
Lyrics
Hey old friend, we’ve got some difficult things to talk through, I’ve been
looking in the mirror and I see some ugly truths
We’ve been hanging out forever you and me, you once made me
strong and free, you brought the courage out in me
But lately things have got so tough, and the seas got kind of rough and
You were there when I was caught in the wave, I wrapped myself in
you to dull my pain.
And did you even notice that lately we were hanging out at each day’s end?
They say that one will always want to be a little more than friends
I cannot let this go on for one more day, so I’m walking away,
I hate you yet I love you, in fact I’ve loved you a little too much, my
Old friend this is the end
Hey old friend this may be hard to understand, but I am stronger on
my own now, I took the power from your hands
You’ve been gone a little while now, and I can see things much
more clearly I can soak up every emotion, yet I miss your touch so
dearly
but now it’s time to drop my hold on that fake and brittle crutch
You don’t need me and I don’t need you its been forty years and I’ve learnt that much
And did you even notice that lately we were hanging out at each day’s end?
They say that one will always want to be a little more than friends
I cannot let this go for one more day, so I’m walking away,
I hate you yet I love you, in fact I’ve loved you a little too much, my
Old friend this is the end
Do you recall that summer day on the deck do you remember when
we drank all alone
We deconstructed the puzzle of life, and how we picked it to the bones
So I hope these words won’t shock you please don’t take this news too rough,
I’ll still see you in the hotel bar but you know we must never touch
And do you think that anyone will notice if we’re not hanging out at each day’s end?
Sometimes friends aren’t meant to be any more than friends
I could not let this go for one more day, so I threw your crutch away,
I’ll never hate you I still love you but there’s no words left to say except my old friend this is the end my old friend this is the end
