This is one of those songs that sits in the back of your mind for a long time, waiting for a home. It’s a story about my life and the roller coaster ride it has been. It started with me thinking life is just one big gamble, and then I got the idea of just telling the story using gambling references. Some of them are well known, but some are fairly obscure, so you’ll have to look them up. Then, when it came down to putting a melody to the story, I remembered this cool moment in the French Quarter of New Orleans where I was just mesmerized by the feel of ragtime music with its controlled chaos. So, I decided that was going to be the musical inspiration. We were incredibly fortunate when recording the song, and unbeknownst to me, there just happened to be a ragtime band playing in the area. My producer brought them in, and they lent their magic to the song. Probably one of the few country songs you’ll find with clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. Still one of my favourite songs to perform.
