Track #3 from the new EP "The Leadology Trombone Band" is titled "Sir Wellington of Locksley. This is my homage to an important mentor of mine and a hero to trombonists and composers everywhere: Slide Hampton. Slide's given name was Locksley Wellington Hampton, thus my cheeky awarding of royalty to the great man via this title.
There are LOTS of "Slide-isms" all throughout this one both harmonically and orchestration-wise (there always ARE in my work–such is his influence on my composition life) along with my own stuff. This one was quite a challenge, but a magnificent joy to record.
Solos are by Joey Skoch on piano, followed by a wonderful new star in the trombone firmament: Kirby Fellis (a recent graduate of the programs of both Michael Dease, Tom Garling, and Reggie Thomas) , and then I close out the solos with a turn of my own. After the initial solo section however, it's time for my good friend Dave Bayles to hold court as Director of our percussion section. Dave expertly navigates all the trombone mine fields that I placed in his way and creates a swinging solo of his own in spite of it all! :)
I hope that you all enjoy listening to this it as much as we enjoyed recording it!
Here's to YOU, Slide Hampton!
