Six Doors by Maliheh Moradi & Ehsan Matoori
The new album Our Sorrow is out now, listen here: https://lnk.fuga.com/malihehmoradiehsanmatoori_oursorrow-1
The song ‘Six Doors’ comes from another Iranian poet, Khaqani, who often referred to ‘six doors’ as a challenging place where someone finds themselves lost and unable to move forward, or in a realm where escape is difficult – either physically or emotionally. ‘Six Doors’, in Ehsan’s words, “was the initial feeling I took from Maliheh’s life. For years, she had to sit backstage alone. The bricks of the wall were her audiences. Throughout the time I was working with her on this album, I felt as if she were sitting in a room full of dreams. In there, she had fallen in love, parted ways, felt sadness, and even sung for her audiences. However, it seemed like in this dream room there was a strong lock, and it locked six doors. The challenge lay in opening each of these doors, revealing the intricate facets of her experiences and emotions.”
Like many Iranian women, Maliheh has suffered multiple injustices that led her to leave her homeland. However, following her immigration, she has now appeared solo on many stages, proudly sharing her music and stories. Her journey represents the personal experience of being a female musician born in Iran, as well as acknowledging the sorrow, suffering and struggle for freedom against the injustices that all other underrepresented communities endure. But there is hope for change, there is defiance against repression, and there is determination to be heard. In Maliheh’s own words…
“One day, I will return to Iran and sing for my people.”
