Born in 1927 in the rural town of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Ezekiel Turner grew up in a family steeped in the traditions of gospel and spiritual music. His father was a preacher, and his mother led the church choir, so Zeke’s early life was filled with the sounds of hymns and soulful harmonies. However, the blues found him in a way that gospel never could.

As a child, Zeke often snuck out to listen to a local blind guitarist, known only as "Old Moses," who played on the corner of Church and Market Streets. The raw, heart-wrenching blues Moses played spoke to Zeke in a way the polished songs of the church didn’t. When Moses gifted Zeke his first guitar, a battered acoustic with a single missing string, Zeke’s destiny was set.

By the time he was 16, Zeke had honed his craft, blending the sacred with the secular, infusing his blues songs with the storytelling and vocal power he learned in church. His music became a voice for the struggles of Black farmers, laborers, and the oppressed in Jim Crow South Carolina. #ai #aicover #music #soulmusic #rnb #blues #disco #70smusic #motown
