A Take Away Show with The Zawose Queens

Vincent Moon était allé filmer à Bagamoyo, le village de The Zawose Queens en Tanzanie il y a plus de dix ans - notre rencontre à Lausanne commence donc en backstage, un peu avant leur concert, avec une petite danse mémorielle devant l’écran lumineux d’un téléphone portable, où résonnent déjà les merveilleuses polyphonies du peuple Gogo. Elles ne connaissaient pas ce petit film, et y reconnaissent un frère, un grand-père, une cousine; éclats de rire tonitruants de femmes pionnières qui s’émancipent des traditions. C’est leur première tournée européenne, elles reviennent de quatre concerts d’affilée à Glastonbury, mais gardent la disponibilité d’un tournage de dernière minute. C’est à la nuit tombée, que nous rejoindrons Pendo et Leah, éméchées et joyeuses, ‘illimba’ (piano à pouce) en bandoulière, pour une virée en recul de l’effervescence du Festival de la Cité. Un concert à emporter tel un feu puissant en pleine verdure, avec l’immensité aride de la province du Dodoma au coeur.

Vincent Moon went to film in Bagamoyo, The Zawose Queens' village in Tanzania, more than ten years ago - our encounter in Lausanne began backstage, shortly before their concert, with a little memorial dance in front of the bright screen of a mobile phone, on which the wonderful polyphonies of the Gogo people already resonate. They hadn't heard of this little film and recognized in it a brother, a grandfather, a cousin; thunderous bursts of laughter from pioneering women who emancipate themselves from traditions. This is their first European tour. They just came back from four concerts in a row at Glastonbury, but still found time for a last minute shoot. It is at nightfall that we joined Pendo and Leah - tipsy and joyful, their ‘illimba’ (thumb piano) slung over their shoulders - for a trip away from the excitement of the Festival de la Cité. A Take Away Show like a powerful fire in the middle of greenery, with the arid immensity of the Dodoma province in the heart.
