What should’ve been a career-defining moment for UGK almost didn’t happen — and it’s all thanks to Pimp C being, well, Pimp C.

According to Bun B and Too Short, getting Pimp on Jay-Z’s iconic Big Pimpin’ track was like pulling teeth. “We were all on Jive Records,” Bun explained. “Jay wanted me on the record, and I was down. But we had to spend two and a half months trying to convince Pimp to even consider it.”

Why the hesitation? Pimp had a long memory and a deeper code. “If you ever said something bad about Tupac, Pimp didn’t mess with you,” Too Short said. “He lumped Jay-Z in with the East Coast cats he thought Pac didn’t like. So off rip, he wasn’t feeling it.”

Eventually, Pimp agreed — but only under his terms: “I’m only giving y’all 8 bars.” And when it came time to shoot the video in Trinidad during Carnival, he really wasn’t going. “He’s like, ‘I just bought a new car and I ain’t flying to no damn island for no video,’” Bun recalled. Ironically, his girl at the time was in the video... so guess who eventually pulled up? Pimp. In the Benz. With the girl. On his time.

Then, the icing on the chaos cake: Pimp C hits the beach in a full mink coat. Bun said Jay-Z looked at him like, “You really gonna wear that out here?”

He did. Because that’s who Pimp C was — unapologetically uncompromising.
