I really like using the diminished scale to create an interesting mysterious sound over bluesy vamps.
I used to struggle with this scale, in large part because the first shape of this scale that I learned climbed up and down the neck. It made it hard to see the scale in a position. Every other scale I had learned had a position that went across the neck and related to a chord shape so that I could easily see the intervals that I was playing.
When I learned this simple diminished scale shape it really opened the door for me to tap into the diminished scale and then get back to the pentatonic (or Dorian or Mixolydian) shape is that same position.
